BECOMING MORE INTERESTED IN ART THROUGH DESIGNING A PRODUCT
GEOMETRY
In my 10th grade year, I became more interested within different types of art forms throughout the year that came through projects. Whether it was a physical creation or written work, it was an improvement for me to make in my skills and learn what I would like to do in the future once I leave DRSS. However, one of the projects that I think helped me realize more on how artistic ability can influence many job fields was the Sports Drink Project that was completed in Geometry class
For the Sports Drink Project, a group had to develop a drink container that could contain a measure of 20 fl. oz. and was made with at least 2 different three dimensional shapes that we learned in the unit we were going over at the time. With this, we also needed to make a case that could hold 8 drinks at once and make a PowerPoint showing off what our product is and what it will take to make it. What my group did first was think of a design and sketching up ideas of what shapes we could’ve used to be creative with the final design later on. It was decided that our bottle design was going to be a circular base and a small cylinder on top to drink from. With this, we started to find the volume and surface areas of the cylinder and sphere shapes so that they could fit within the requirements that we had. After taking the time to find the closest size to our required size and approved by the teacher, our group started to do their own jobs to make the process faster.
Each member of the group had a part they were responsible for, whether it was designing prototypes of the drink and casing, developing PowerPoints for the final reveal, or finding costs and material for the case and product, there was something for each member to spend their time on. For me, I was in task of the creative side of the product, but also making a math report for what we came up with. I drew up different drafts of schematics for what the drink would look like and also created images for our drink label to make the product more appealing to customers. In the first drafts, the bottle design seemed blander than it should’ve been. The lack of imagery on the label and just the color tone seemed unappealing, but the drink color was pretty good because the color would get lighter as it reached the top of the container, so I decided to keep the concept. In addition, there was also a long slogan underneath the logo and that felt a little controlling for what people wanted to read first, so the solution was to use a smaller slogan for the drink and place it near the nutritional facts to allow people to see what the bottle truly could be. And lastly, I collaborated with another group member to come up with some image ideas for the label and came up with an idea that seemed most appropriate for the drink overall.
As the project went on, the schematics became more detailed, including the images I talked about on the front that were going to be added, as well as back and top views to show everything that was put into our group’s final product. There are also images made in gimp, a photo editing software, and put together into the PowerPoint to show what the real label would look like. Throughout the project, I got to learn more about the designing process needed to be taken when making something to be shared with a general audience. I also learned more about what each person would like in a product and mesh them together to make everyone pleased with the overall results.
